Petite Fashion Challenge 13 - Stylish for Under 100 Dollars

I'm participating for the 2nd time in the Petite Fashion Challenge and this time Really Petite came up with the task:
Stylish for under $100: Put together a professional outfit (excluding shoes and accessories) for under $100.

Easy peasy considering I pretty much NEVER buy anything that's not on sale or without a coupon!

I love the color of this skirt from Target but it was about 6 inches too long. Since I didn't spend too much on it, I was courageous and hemmed it myself. It made a huge difference and I think it'll be a staple in my wardrobe from now on. I might even go back and get the "Inca Red" one that is a beautiful watermelon-y color.

I've gotten so much wear out of this H&M blazer (here, here, and here), that I don't feel guilty paying full price for it (*gasp* $34.95! lol). I even bought it in gray :)

When in doubt, leopard print pumps always adds fun to an outfit!!

Make sure to pop over at Really Petite's blog to see what all the fashionable petites are wearing!

What I Made - DIY Diaper Cake

Usually I'm not a huge fan of diaper cakes... perhaps because most of the ones I've seen in real life have been lumpy, lopsided, and kind of ugly, lol. But as I pinned things for Lindsey's baby shower earlier this month, I came across a couple of diaper cakes that were covered with receiving blankets, giving it a smoother finish. I used this tutorial from Real Moms: Baby Shower Diaper Cake and adjusted the decorating to fit my pickiness, lol.

I bought all of my materials at Target, except for the wide pink glitter ribbon & cake base (purchased at Michaels).

I sat in front of the TV and rolled about 80 diapers (a mix of newborn swaddlers & the next size up) using the clear elastics. I thought my cuticles were going to bleed but it didn't take very long.

Use the baby powder as the base and stand the diapers around it like a ring. I think I did 3 or 4 rings around to make the bottom "tier" the biggest. Secure with a rubber band.

I did not take a picture of this but... the next tier will still be around the baby powder. Stand the rolled diapers around so it's slightly smaller than the bottle tier. Then I used glue dots to secure the 4oz. baby bottle on top of the baby powder and finished off my last tier around the bottle.

I prewashed the 4 receiving blankets from Target, ironed and folded them to fit the width of my tiers. I ironed again to make it nice & crisp. The bottom tier required 2 blankets to cover it so I just overlapped them (you can see a little green on the inside of the bottom tier). I secured the blankets with small pins.

Then I wrapped the ribbon around the tiers & secured those with small pins as well.

I didn't like that you could see the diapers so I used some crinkle paper from Dollar Tree to camouflage. I didn't add a cake "topper" because I couldn't find anything that matched the pinks in the blankets & ribbon (I'm a little anal when it comes to stuff like that) but I think it kept the diaper cake simple.

Easy! Now I should go help Lindsey unroll all those diapers before her baby girl arrives in March, lol.

What I Wore - Yeah, I tucked again, and what?

Cardigan - F21, Gingham shirt - NY&Co, Skirt - Loft, Shoes - Nine West, Necklace Irredese, Watch - Coach

The weather in NJ has been a little nutty for February and this past Thursday it was 58 degrees. I was so excited to go bare legged after months of wearing tights that I added a bright skirt into the mix. I've been having a hard time styling my red jeans and this skirt was a little easier. I didn't want to wear black and white with it again (like here), I think the blue gingham paired with the neutral gray cardigan (to avoid stumpy legs and define my waist) was a good contrast. I got a ton of compliments and the fact the the sun was shining and the breeze was warm made the day that much better :)

What I Wore - Dotted Twice

 Top - Old Navy, Skirt - Ann Taylor, Stockings - F21, Shoes - Aerosoles, Necklace - F21

I felt really girly in this outfit today. I don't know if it was the pencil skirt, the red lip, or the sheer polka dotted stockings but all of it put together turned out pretty feminine. I've gotten a lot of wear out of this top and tons of compliments. Not bad for $12!

Anyone shocked how quickly the days have been going by? Happy Hump Day!

Sequin Shorts Restyled

I had been on a hunt for sequin shorts since before NYE all thanks to Pinterest and awesome style bloggers wearing things like this:

I finally came across a pair I thought I could pull off at Lord & Taylor for 60% off and didn't think twice about purchasing them. I mean, even if I looked like a fool wearing them, I'd only be $18 in the hole.
Jessica Simpson Sequin Shorts

I wore them to a girls' night out in Atlantic City a couple weekends ago. If there's anywhere you can wear sequin shorts without getting side-eyed, it's AC. I kept it simple with a white tank and a boyfriend blazer.

Last night, Serg & I went out in NYC to celebrate a friend's birthday and I felt like giving my sequin shorts another try. This time I may have channeled Liza Minnelli with a black sweater over a white button down.
Fifi was in the mood to get photographed.

I'm glad I didn't knock sequin shorts as a trend I couldn't try (although I'll probably never wear them without black tights). It's a fun alternative to a skirt, dress, or black skinnies for our random nights out. What do you think?

What I Wore - Short & Tights (Copycat Inspiration)

Cardigan - Target, Shirt - The Limited, Shorts - Gap (cut off jeans), Tights - F21, Oxfords - F21, Sunglasses - Juicy, Belt - NY&Co.

Inspired by:

Yesterday was one of those days where you wake up naturally to the sun shining in your room and everything feels happy. All my favorite songs were playing on the radio, my morning coffee was prepared perfectly and I enjoyed great conversations with my parents while sipping it, and I even got the first parking spot at Target.

I really like this shorts with tights look. I've never worn lighter shoes with darker tights but I think it works with my oxfords. The outfit was comfy, cute, and a nice addition to my perfect Saturday afternoon. Now if only every day could be like that!

What I Wore - Plaid Pants

 Blazer - Gap (Old circa 2004), Pants - Loehmann's, Sweater - Loft, Necklace - F21, Watch - Michael Kors, Shoes - Loft

Does anyone remember how cool plaid pants were in the late 90s? I bought my first pair from Delias and tried to replicate as many outfits from Clueless as possible, lol. Obviously those outfits and pants are not work appropriate so I toned it down with a smaller plaid print and a blazer today.

How's this for an inspirational picture?
As if! ;)

What I Wore - Bright Color Combo

Cardigan - August Silk, Blouse - Loft, Skirt - F21, Tights - Target, Shoes - Cole Haan

Today was one of those days I wish I could have just stayed home. It's gloomy, wet, and cold out and I hoped the bright colors would brighten the day a bit. This combination was definitely out of my usual comfort zone but I really like it.

Sadly, my cheery outfit did not brighten everyone's day. Work was really hard today and several people were trying my patience. I don't understand why people think it's ok to be rude to someone who is only doing their job and trying to teach you something new. Good thing they can't read my mind because I certainly wasn't smiling and nodding in there, lol.

What I Wore - Chambray & Minis

 Cardigan - F21, Chambray shirt - Old Navy, Cami - Gap (super old), Skirt - H&M, Tights - F21, Boots - Aerosoles, Belt - old, Earrings - F21

Serg and I had an interesting weekend... we went to the Philadelphia Tattoo Art Convention. And it's really difficult to go there and not get a tattoo!

My mother's maiden name means "olive tree" so a couple years ago I gave my mother, sister, aunt, and cousin a necklace with a little olive branch on it. My sister then got it tattooed on her wrist and I gave into temptation and got it somewhere easier to hide for work. I love it! Not so sure what my parents will say though, lol.
